Here is a Clifford Brown solo for the Bird tune Confirmation. I have tweaked certain phrases around to make the horn lines easier for me to play on the mandolin. For the real solo, look in the Clifford Brown transcription book by Marc Lewis.Notice all the chromatic surround and approach notes he used. To my ears, Clifford was the all time master of this sound.
Other players, like Bird, did this somewhat before Clifford, but he made these phrases common place in the Jazz language. Every Jazz great after him seemed to use these a lot more due to Cliffords influence.I've been working on this solo two months and can only play it around 220 bpm. Don't know if I'll ever get it up to full speed, but it sure is fun to try.
I'll post more Clifford solos as I get to them. The Blakey - Donaldson stuff is wonderful. I've always liked Lou Donaldson, very under rated player.Lou Donaldson rocks!

I got to see him perform live once back in the 1980s. My mentor/teacher the late great Gene Ramey helped bring him to Austin for a performance. Donaldson went through various phases of his career but that night he was in full Charlie Parker mode. We've all heard folks try to play in a Parkeresque manner but Donaldson had it nailed. The phrasing and tone were just spot on.A bunch of the local jazz sax players were there that night. I enjoyed hearing them talk about the show.
Just like mandolinists, they got to the equipment/gear-head portion of the discussion. It kind of annoyed them that Donaldson got that dead-on Parker tone using a regular horn, regular mouthpiece, regular reed. It wasn't the gear; it was the player.Paul GlasseAustin, TexasLast edited by pglasse; Mar-26-2009 at 2:04pm.
