. 00:00 / 00:00Illustrated for Storynory by.Read by Natasha. Duration 17.36 Minutes. English text by Andrew Lang.Proofread by Claire Deakin & Jana Elizabeth.ONCE there was a gentleman who married, for his second wife, the proudest and most haughty woman that was ever seen. She had been married before, and already had two daughters who were exactly like her in all things. He had likewise, by his first wife, a young daughter, but of unequalled goodness and sweetness of temper, which she took from her mother, who was the best creature in the world.
This sweet little girl missed her mother, who had died, terribly muchNo sooner was the wedding ceremony over, than the new wife began to show herself in her true colours. She could not bear the goodness of the gentleman’s pretty girl, and especially as she made her own daughters appear the more horrid. She made her do the meanest jobs in the house. The girl scoured the dishes and tables, and scrubbed the stepmother’s bathroom, and those of her daughters.
She slept in a little attic, upon a wretched straw bed, while her sisters lay upon beds with the softest pillows, in fine rooms, with floors covered with beautiful carpets, and walls on which hung looking-glasses so large that they might see themselves at their full length from head to foot. The poor girl bore all patiently, and dared not tell her father, who would have been angry with her; for his new wife ruled him entirely. When the little girl had done her work, she used to go into the chimney corner, and sit down among cinders and ashes, which led her to be called Cinderwench; but the youngest stepdaughter, who was not quite so rude and unkind as the eldest, called her Cinderella. However, Cinderella, dressed in rags was a hundred times prettier than her sisters, though they were always dressed very richly. It happened that the king’s son gave a ball, and invited all the finest gentlemen and ladies of the city.
Our young misses’ were also invited, for they were always to be seen at fashionable parties. They were truly delighted at this invitation, and wonderfully busy in choosing such gowns, petticoats, and headdresses as might suit them. This was a new trouble to Cinderella, for it was she who washed and ironed her sisters’ clothes and got all their things ready. I from Morocco, I’ve been learning english for so long, but still, those stories really help me to improve my english. Now, my two little girl and boy like to listen to it while going to school in the car, and also before sleeping, even though they don’t understand much of what it says.
But I really believe it will help them to have a good english pronunciation. I whish to aknowlege Storynory, Bertie and Natasha for allowing us download all those beautiful stories for free!! HelloThank you for your comment. Cinderella by Charles Perrault is a beautiful tale. When the young girl who sweeps hard away all day in the cellar, is granted a wish by the fairy godmother, that takes her all the way to the ball, she meets her prince charming. Cinderella must be careful however to watch the time as then the fairy godmothers spell will reverse and her horse and carriage, will turn back into a pumpkin. Cinderella is fortunate enough to leave her glass slipper behind that the young prince picks up and finds her with. Thanks for listeningWhy not try Storynory rss app feedByebByeN.—August 3, 2011.

CinderellaThe wife of a rich man fell sick, and as she felt that her endwas drawing near, she called her only daughter to her bedside andsaid, dear child, be good and pious, and then thegood God will always protect you, and I will look down on youfrom heaven and be near you. Thereupon she closed her eyes anddeparted. Every day the maiden went out to her mother’s grave, and wept, and she remained pious and good.
When winter camethe snow spread a white sheet over the grave, and by the time thespring sun had drawn it off again, the man had taken another wife. The woman had brought with her into the house two daughters, who were beautiful and fair of face, but vile and black of heart. Now began a bad time for the poor step-child. Is the stupid gooseto sit in the parlor with us, they said. He who wants to eat breadmust earn it. Out with the kitchen-wench.
They took her prettyclothes away from her, put an old grey bedgown on her, and gaveher wooden shoes. Just look at the proud princess, how deckedout she is, they cried, and laughed, and led her into the kitchen. There she had to do hard work from morning till night, get upbefore daybreak, carry water, light fires, cook and wash. Besidesthis, the sisters did her every imaginable injury – they mocked herand emptied her peas and lentils into the ashes, so that she wasforced to sit and pick them out again. In the evening when she hadworked till she was weary she had no bed to go to, but had to sleepby the hearth in the cinders. And as on that account she alwayslooked dusty and dirty, they called her cinderella. It happened that the father was once going to the fair, and heasked his two step-daughters what he should bring back for them.Beautiful dresses, said one, pearls and jewels, said the second. And you, cinderella, said he, what will you have. Fatherbreak off for me the first branch which knocks against your hat onyour way home.
So he bought beautiful dresses, pearls and jewelsfor his two step-daughters, and on his way home, as he was ridingthrough a green thicket, a hazel twig brushed against him andknocked off his hat. Then he broke off the branch and took it withhim. When he reached home he gave his step-daughters the thingswhich they had wished for, and to cinderella he gave the branchfrom the hazel-bush. Cinderella thanked him, went to her mother’sgrave and planted the branch on it, and wept so much that the tearsfell down on it and watered it. And it grew and became a handsometree. Thrice a day cinderella went and sat beneath it, and wept andprayed, and a little white bird always came on the tree, and ifcinderella expressed a wish, the bird threw down to her what shehad wished for.It happened, however, that the king gave orders for a festivalwhich was to last three days, and to which all the beautiful younggirls in the country were invited, in order that his son might choosehimself a bride.
When the two step-sisters heard that they too wereto appear among the number, they were delighted, called cinderellaand said, comb our hair for us, brush our shoes and fasten ourbuckles, for we are going to the wedding at the king’s palace.Cinderella obeyed, but wept, because she too would have liked togo with them to the dance, and begged her step-mother to allowher to do so. You go, cinderella, said she, covered in dust anddirt as you are, and would go to the festival. You have no clothesand shoes, and yet would dance.
As, however, cinderella went onasking, the step-mother said at last, I have emptied a dish oflentils into the ashes for you, if you have picked them out again intwo hours, you shall go with us. The maiden went through theback-door into the garden, and called, you tame pigeons, youturtle-doves, and all you birds beneath the sky, come and help meto pickthe good into the pot,the bad into the crop. Then two white pigeons came in by the kitchen window, andafterwards the turtle-doves, and at last all the birds beneath thesky, came whirring and crowding in, and alighted amongst the ashes. And the pigeons nodded with their heads and began pick, pick, pick, pick, and the rest began also pick, pick, pick, pick, andgathered all the good grains into the dish. Hardly had one hourpassed before they had finished, and all flew out again. Then thegirl took the dish to her step-mother, and was glad, and believedthat now she would be allowed to go with them to the festival. But the step-mother said, no, cinderella, you have no clothes andyou can not dance. You would only be laughed at. And ascinderella wept at this, the step-mother said, if you can pick twodishes of lentils out of the ashes for me in one hour, you shall gowith us. And she thought to herself, that she most certainlycannot do again.
When the step-mother had emptied the twodishes of lentils amongst the ashes, the maiden went through theback-door into the garden and cried, you tame pigeons, youturtle-doves, and all you birds beneath the sky, come and help meto pickthe good into the pot,the bad into the crop. Then two white pigeons came in by the kitchen-window, andafterwards the turtle-doves, and at length all the birds beneath thesky, came whirring and crowding in, and alighted amongst theashes. And the doves nodded with their heads and began pick, pick, pick, pick, and the others began also pick, pick, pick, pick, and gathered all the good seeds into the dishes, and before half anhour was over they had already finished, and all flew out again. Then the maiden was delighted, and believed that she might now gowith them to the wedding. But the step-mother said, all this willnot help. You cannot go with us, for you have no clothes and cannot dance. We should be ashamed of you. On this she turned herback on cinderella, and hurried away with her two proud daughters. As no one was now at home, cinderella went to her mother’sgrave beneath the hazel-tree, and cried –shiver and quiver, little tree, silver and gold throw down over me.Then the bird threw a gold and silver dress down to her, andslippers embroidered with silk and silver. She put on the dresswith all speed, and went to the wedding.
Her step-sisters and thestep-mother however did not know her, and thought she must be aforeign princess, for she looked so beautiful in the golden dress. They never once thought of cinderella, and believed that she wassitting at home in the dirt, picking lentils out of the ashes. Theprince approached her, took her by the hand and danced with her.He would dance with no other maiden, and never let loose of herhand, and if any one else came to invite her, he said, this is mypartner. She danced till it was evening, and then she wanted to go home. But the king’s son said, I will go with you and bear you company, for he wished to see to whom the beautiful maiden belonged. She escaped from him, however, and sprang into thepigeon-house. The king’s son waited until her father came, andthen he told him that the unknown maiden had leapt into thepigeon-house. The old man thought, can it be cinderella. Andthey had to bring him an axe and a pickaxe that he might hewthe pigeon-house to pieces, but no one was inside it. ”colours” is not right (colors) is rightbut i still llllloooooovvveeee iiiiiitttttt!!!!!!!So so so so so so so so so so so so so so so so so so soso so so so so so so so so so so so so so so so so so soso so so so so so so so so so so so so so so so so so soso so so so so so so so so so so so so so so so so so soso so so so so so so so so so so so so so so so so so soMUCH!!!PLEEEEEAAAAASSSSEEEE OOOOOOHHHH PLLLEEEEAAAASSSSEEERRRRRRREEEEEESSSSSPPPPPPPOOOOONNNNNEEEEEDDDDD!!!!!annie —October 19, 2014.
