Try to hold those three regions and wait until you can convert them into your culture, the costs will get cheaper as your religion spreads. Fighting the Romans also gets all the barbarian factions around you to love you and try to ally with you. Watch your food supply as your starting regions have poor fertility. Use your cavalry, it is extremely badass compared to the factions around you. The second tier infantry with axes is also very useful.
Lastly, watch it with the three British factions as they started spreading like crazy in my campaign and became very hard to take down. Once you have a solid base in Gaul, conquering the rest of Roman territories in Western Europe becomes fairly easy. I destroyed the Saxons by turn three, the Angles quickly after. That gives you one pretty decent province to start with.
I worked up to Denmark and Sweden after building up my forces for a bit, then turned south to Germania. I then took the provinces to the east along the coast and the one south of it, can't recall the names. I'm at about 412 AD and have 4 upgraded armies with about 5700 per turn coming in, excess of 300+ food and only growing with upgrades.Everything left to the east is desolate, along with a few regions in my provinces because of previous Hun attacks. They have yet to declare war on me, so they just travel through my territory.
My next plan is to move to Italy, through the Western Roman Seperatists.Also, get as many harbor cities as possible. Fishing is a good source of food. And goats.Quick edit: Everyone hates me. I had to destroy all of the little factions with a little help from the Huns.
A few migrated to Italy and send little raiding armies once in a while, which is annoying, but no big deal. But I don't even have a trading partner.
Yeah, I wiped out the Angles and the Saxons for Frisia at the beginning of the campaign and it was just a cruise after that. If you wait a couple turns before declaring war on Rome you will not be their primary target. I think the hordes that have gotten into Italy are all they're worried about right now. I took a Roman city every turn, Attila was just born and I have modern day France except Aquitainia, Frisia, and southern Britain and I only had to fight one legion in Britain for it. The Jutes, Geats, Picts, Caledonians, Varinians, Lombards, British, Eblanians, Rugians, Alamans, and Suebians all decided to ally with me when I declared war on Rome. It's been me versus hopeless Roman garrisons.
So much different than my Saxons campaign where I my invasion of Britain immediately got stomped. Now I'm just trying to get some large onagers, waiting for the huns.As some tips, Faramund apparently is hopeless at finding a wife, you have to get one from diplomacy. Mine still will not breed, however, I dunno why. The Franks get a unit, the Bagaude, which cost like 40 for upkeep, which you can use to keep public order. I swear, it's the best unit in the game. Conversion costs scale with the presence of Germanic paganism. Roman units are amazingly tough to kill.
I went east rather than west, so I have yet to deal with the WRE, leading to every little faction hating me. I'll have to deal with the Separatists here soon though. But for a first play through with my only other Total War being Empire and FotS, I'm happy. I miss good artillery though.And I tried so many goddamn times to get him married, but it just wasn't happening.
Right now the only second generation heir I have is from the adopted brother. I have like 10 daughters, mostly bastards.
Heh, funny thing is, I've actually started playing a new campaign as the Picts, and I've been absolutely wrecking all three Viking factions at the same time. The fact that they're still just throwing full stacks of Nordic Band and Nordic Levy at me when I'm fielding Celtic Warriors and Crossbowmen might have something to do with it.On another note, does anyone else feel that Celtic crossbowmen might be a tad OP? I mean, they've got all the firepower of crossbows, but are so dirt-cheap that I regularly field half a dozen units of them in all of my armies, making them incredibly hard to stop.
